I managed the Editorial team made up of internal staff and freelancers, and was responsible for the charity’s magazines and guides, as well as certain sections of the website. The team worked across print and online, adapting copy for various channels. As part of my role and interests, I researched health and lifestyle issues, constantly finding new ways to appeal to the wide‐ranging audience by planning and commissioning content to ensure engaging, informative copy. I also oversaw the magazine’s budget, design and overall feel of the magazines, organised photo shoots and commissioned illustrations. I regularly liaised with our advertising agency to maximise income. I had overall responsibility of the magazines, signing off all proofs and ensuring all deadlines were met.

As Deputy Editor for Diabetes Balance, I commissioned the Life & Health section and wrote new and engaging content for various other sections. I also edited the News section, which involved considering and prioritising submissions, and advising teams across the charity on how to write news stories. In the Editor’s absence I managed the team, signed off proofs, liaised with external suppliers, e.g. the advertising agency about any last‐minute advertisements and made any necessary adjustments to the flatplan. I also coordinated material for the Diabetes UK website. Additionally, I edited Tadpole Times, a quarterly magazine for children (a fun way for children to learn about diabetes, containing cartoons and puzzles). I chose the theme for each issue, wrote the content, commissioned illustrations and managed the designers. I also developed features and articles for Diabetes UK’s MyLife Teens website and commissioned the Production Editor or external contributors to write for this section. I edited the Diabetes for Beginners range, one‐off paid‐for guides for people newly diagnosed with the condition. I managed production schedules, devised flatplans, as well as liaised with the advertisement agency, printers and distributors. In the last 12 months of the post, I organised a revamp process for two of these titles, holding focus groups, commissioning new content and sections, sourcing new photography and changing layouts and formats.

A fast‐paced membership magazine/book publishers, where I was promoted to Deputy Editor from Assistant within my first year of employment. Responsible for two hobby magazines, Woodcarving and Furniture & Cabinetmaking, I played a vital role in the editorial and production processes.
