I am employed to teach children aged 3-4 years, taking into account their social and emotional needs and their physical abilities ensuring that a well-rounded programme is followed to develop them fully. The Mandini Pre-school has 3 classes dividing the children into their different age groups; 3-4 years, 4-5 years, and 5-6 years with the classes accommodating 35 children largely made up from rural areas.My teaching responsibilities include organizing well-balanced weekly lesson plans based on the CAPS documents which provide South African teachers with guidelines to plan timetables and learning content for their lessons as well as guidelines for recording, reporting and progression requirements in the Foundation Phase.These plans allow sufficient time for teacher directed, indoor activities to develop the young child’s skills such as drawing, cutting and number related activities.Ring times incorporating theme discussions, developmental play, movement, music and drama.Stories told daily to develop listening and comprehension skills and to stimulate the imagination.Free play periods with varied, stimulating activities aimed at the pre-schoolers needs. I also perform observations and assessments and complete quarterly report cards, monitoring the learner’s development and communicating that information to their parents.Extra school activities include attractively assembling items for our display tables and planning end of year concerts and plays.

I worked for four years implementing the learning programme for the Grade one’s and then spent one year continuing and consolidating studies in the Grade three class in the areas of:English (home language) – practicing phonetic sounds and blends and coordinating shared reading groups; developing listening and speaking skills in daily activities and ensuring the practice of correct handwriting and creative writing exercises.Afrikaans – basic introduction of a second languageMathematics - concretely working with numbers, patterning activities, exploring space and shape, measurement and sorting of data.Life skills – Skills covering the areas of Creative arts, Physical development, Personal and social well-being.The school educated children from Grade R – Grade 7 and to encourage positive behaviour in the school environment, they implemented mentor programmes between the older and younger age groups. This encouraged behaviour to suit a role model in the older learners and they in turn assisted the teachers in simple tasks, helping to watch over the younger children at break times and assembly etc. I was involved in fundraising as part of my extra duties and responsibilities and worked as a team to organise functions and fun days during the year to bring in extra money for the school.
