When I was a child, one of my best friends lived with a physical disability I never understood why people would be rude in public just because she was different, and I would often think “I want to change what they think about her, they don't even know her.” As an adult, I have funneled that lifelong passion into a rewarding career where I get to help people every day. Throughout 24 years of nonprofit fundraising and business administration and 10 years in event management, I have raised more than $10 million for great causes: assisting people affected by cerebral palsy and a range of other disabilities, helping women make safe decisions regarding their babies, and most recently, education for children through innovative programming. In my most recent role as Special Events Manager at Harbor Day School, I acted as a steward of the organization’s mission, overseeing donor cultivation and building a community of support. I executed annual events of 25 to 700 attendees and raised more than $500k annually. I am particularly passionate about leading volunteers to create excellent events that fulfill our mission—I consider it a group effort of shared empathy, love, and compassion. At the end of the day, my world is about giving all I can to everyone I can. When I believe in an organization’s purpose, I wholeheartedly plan events, exceed fundraising goals, build long-term relationships, and develop new processes that create more effective programs and administrative procedures. I want to make a difference, and I like to think that my childhood superhero cape is still tucked away in my closet, ready at a moment’s notice.
