I am working with an incredible team that is changing Nairobi! I am a Founder & Managing Trustee at Book Bunk, where we are restoring some of Nairobi’s most iconic public libraries. Our flagship project is the full restoration of McMillan Memorial Library on Banda Street and two of its branches in Eastlands (Kaloleni Library and Eastlands Library in Makadara). The architectural restoration of Kaloleni was completed in June 2020, and we completed similar work on Eastlands in August 2021. Additionally our Inventory team created these libraries' first-ever digital catalogue and our Archives department have now digitised more than 100,000 archives which are then uploaded here for public access: https://www.nrblibraries-archive.org. We imagine that public libraries can be steered to become more than just repositories, acting as sites of knowledge production, shared experiences, cultural leadership and information exchange. The 3 libraries now offer a wealth of programming with a focus on arts education, and had 41,086 users over the course of 2022. We need a more enabling environment for creative businesses and ventures, and I channel efforts towards this through the Creative Economy Working Group, where I am a founding member. I have previously been an International Arts Management Fellow at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, and an Obama Foundation Africa Leader (2019-2020). I am also Publisher at Bunk Books and was one of 5 judges for the 2022 AKO Caine Prize for African Writing.
