My journey as an environmental designer started when I drew a picture of someone throwing away trash in kindergarten and won a school-wide award.As a designer starting off in her career, I’m most fascinated with exploring the different ways we’re able to design community-based projects that are sustainable, inclusive, and equitable.My passions can be attributed to my own experiences growing up, Cal Poly’s rigorous architecture program, and my desire to design a world that’s more empathetic to our most disadvantaged. I enjoy learning languages during my free time. I decided to learn Mandarin Chinese during the pandemic and self-taught myself the basics of reading and writing Khmer. I enjoy a good challenge, which is why I particularly enjoy playing games. Ask me anything about Pokémon and I’ll be able to answer it.Each game comes with its own set of rules and challenges, which is why I particularly like testing the boundaries to learn the best way to achieve my goal. Similar to games, architecture also functions with strict rules and I believe that designs are stronger when we think of each rule as a challenge to beat rather than a box to check off. Frustrated by the racial issues exasperated during the pandemic, I entered the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competition to design architecture that addresses the issues that our low-income, often minority, citizens face within our urban areas. That year, our team placed as division finalists in the Attached Housing category for our design in Watts, Los Angeles, CA. The opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary team and approach issues as designers has inspired me to seek innovation within architecture through integrated design strategies. Architecture has the opportunity to address so many different, multifaceted issues, which is why I plan continue to work towards architecture licensure.
