About Angelique Wood

Living on an off-grid property in rural Princeton has taught me a lot about self sufficiency and the value of the natural world to improving well being. We have worked to propagate and conserve the Indigenous plants and trees surrounding us, while fire-smarting our property to reduce the threat of wildfire and increase the open wooded spaces for the animals sharing the space. We have seen the work of two beaver families increase the lake levels, which has increased the shrubbery at the water's edge and the number of birds, turtles, deer and elk. This has been some of the greatest reward for living through the isolation of Covid-19: being granted the time to focus on the physical labour of rewilding a landscape.

I represented the needs of a diverse, largely elderly citizenry to regional and provincial government, utilities (Fortis and Telus), and the BC Utilities Commission. I worked with the media, convened and ran Town Hall meetings, and used transparent methods to distribute grant in aid funding. I sponsored and helped to coordinate a series of educational and capacity building meetings and “Community Conversations” workshops with my colleague Kim English. We partnered with the Okanagan Regional Library for our Community Conversations and focused on Similkameen residents as a whole.I served on two sub-provincial Boards (Southern Interior Local Governement Association-SILGA and Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition- SIBAC) representing a Southern Interior region much larger than the RDOS- both boards advocated, educated and worked on community development and leadership development.I championed and led an initiative to develop affordable housing in the Similkameen Valley using the Community Land Trust model common in the UK and USA. This initiative will assist in rural revitalization by creating a pool of affordable housing and employment while caring for seniors and allowing them to age in place.Environment: Served a 2500km2 area of 2,200 peopleAccomplishments: Brought together multiple community stakeholders working in silos to work on shared projects to increase community health in both the town of Hedley and the Similkameen Valley- most notably the Similkameen Valley Tourism Plan and the Similkameen Valley Watershed plan. In addition I was a strong supporter of the adoption of the Protocol agreement signed between the Okanagan Nation Alliance and the Regional District Okanagan Similkameen.
