About Angela Hawkins
Growing up, community service was a way to keep myself busy during a hot Kansas summer. I had no idea it would lead me down a path that included two AmeriCorps terms, teaching elementary school students how to dance and how to read, and now managing AmeriCorps grants. With each new step, I grow more dedicated to serving my community.
Listed skills include Public Relations, News Writing, Public Speaking, Microsoft Office, and 12 others.

Angela Hawkins work experience

Americorps Grants Associate
As an AmeriCorps Grants Associate at The Literacy Lab, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about the inner workings of sizable federal grants through hands-on experiences. My day at The Literacy Lab often includes a plethora of grant-related tasks including writing AmeriCorps grants, researching state laws, managing data and report processes, creating systems for ongoing problems and assisting program teams with complex issues. When I’m not writing policies, building relationships with other non-profit and AmeriCorps professionals, or attending AmeriCorps conferences, I enjoy visiting Literacy Lab school partners to see tutors in action.
Americorps Reading Tutor
I provided individualized reading tutoring to 19 first, second and third grade students daily. Adhearing to the Reading Corps model with fidelity, ninety percent of my students increased their reading skills over the course of the year; five reached their grade level in reading. Taking full advantage of my status as an AmeriCorps member, I had the opportunity to design, plan and promote elements of the KC AmeriCorps Alliance’s celebration of AmeriCorps Week, promote and assist the family reading program – Let’s Read! – serving five families at Banneker Elementary and lead volunteers in creating Banneker Elementary’s leveled reader library.
Assistant Communications Coordinator
My time at Burns & McDonnell was filled with variety. One day would be filled with writing and editing the company’s monthly newsletter, Focus, and the next celebrating a company milestone such as hiring the 5,000th employee. I planned, coordinated and promoted companywide internal events such as Take Your Child to Work Day with more than 275 kids and the Burns & Mac Art Show with about 50 works of art by employee-owners. I especially enjoyed coordinating some of the company’s “perks.” The service awards, MacCulture Awards and intramurals programs provided a never-ending element of fun to my days and the employee-owners who benefited from them.
Corporate Communications And Brand Optimization Intern
HNTB allowed me to take on responsibilities I didn’t expect to be given as an intern. Within the first week, I’d joined the company’s Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure planning committee. I organized a series of food truck fundraisers that raised more than $500. While I was there, HNTB was preparing for its 100th anniversary. During that exciting planning process I took control of the company store, managing its current inventory and selecting new items to celebrate the company’s biggest milestone. Of course, as a communications intern, I spend a lot of my time writing, communicating and posting a variety of materials from news releases to feature stories on the company’s internal and external sites and cataloging these materials in a media tracking tool.
Resource Center Office Assistant
Communications Intern
Kansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc. was the best place I could have imagined starting my career. I learned about life in a nonprofit and was able to try things I couldn’t learn through my education. For example, I made cold calls for the first time and sold more than $1,000 in ads for the organization’s member directory. I conducted interviews and wrote for the internal publication, Rural Power, and the 2014 George W. Haggard Memorial Journalism Award winner, Kansas Country Living Magazine. The piece I enjoyed most was working on the organization’s youth programs and materials. My design for a Youth Tour t-shirt received a Spotlight on Excellence Silver award in 2014. However, the experience was more than the award. For the first time I was involved in event planning. I sat on the interview panels for high school students applying to the youth programs and helped coordinate the selected students’ paperwork as they prepared for their trips. My time at KEC was invaluable.
