Senior Fellow
As one of two AbD Oakland Senior Fellows in its inaugural year, I collaborated with the AbD Oakland Leadership Team to coach and mentor a cohort of 30 Oakland educators to help them integrate maker-centered learning into their practices and pursue a personally meaningful inquiry project during the school year. Our team designed, planned, and facilitated monthly after-school meetings, three full day study sessions, and an end-of-year culmination exposition event showcasing each Fellow’s inquiry project. As a senior Fellow, I also more directly provided coaching and mentoring for a smaller subgroup of educators to help them make progress on their projects.
Director, Bourn Idea Lab
Castilleja School is an independent, all-girls school for grades 6-12 located in Palo Alto, California. The Bourn Idea Lab is the school's makerspace, digital fabrication studio, and engineering/robotics lab all rolled into one. Our lab's philosophy is two-fold: to ensure that every student experiences making and engineering in multiple contexts throughout their Castilleja journey and to provide opportunities for students who want to explore engineering more deeply.As the first director of the Bourn Idea Lab and its associated program, my team and I collaborated with teachers of all subjects and grade levels to design, develop, and implement hands-on projects that are integrated into core subject classes, so that every student experiences making and building during their Castilleja journey. In addition, I designed and taught engineering electives and advised the high school FIRST Robotics team.Throughout my time at Castilleja, I prototyped and implemented a variety of opportunities to engage students and teachers in making, tinkering, and hands-on learning. These ranged from after-school making workshops called Maker Fridays to the Bourn Teacher Fellows program, a yearlong fellowship for teachers to immerse themselves in making. Our satellite space the Tinkering Nook opened in spring of 2017 and offered weekly open tinkering times for our middle schoolers. I also facilitated professional development workshops throughout the school year and hosted an annual summer institute called Design Do Discover in collaboration with Marymount School of New York.

Graduate Student Researcher
PhD Advisor: Wendell LimUsed stochastic computational simulations to study how cells polarize, i.e. form fronts and backs, as a self-organizing phenomenon. How do biological systems break symmetry and what are the basic rules driving this process? The rules we discovered not only help us in understanding natural biological systems that exhibit polarization behavior but also guide us in engineering novel biological systems.Also developed CellTracker, a user-friendly software package for automated cell detection and tracking in Matlab. In addition to cell tracking, it calculates a set of useful statistics for the user including speed, direction, straightness, etc. CellTracker is currently being used by multiple researchers in analyzing experimental data involving a variety of cell types.

Scientific mentor for a team of 12 students from Abraham Lincoln High School in building physical models of cell signaling proteins using 3D printing technology as part of the Students Modeling A Research Topic program. Our project was presented as a poster at the 2008 ASBMB meeting in San Diego.
