Current work includes value engineering of projects - usually by introducing Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) methodology and finding solution to site problems.Project highlights are summarised below:• 100 Mount Street, North Sydney, Australia: A 37-storey office tower that being jointly developed by LOR and Dexus. I carried out an assessment of the design and construction methodology and the results from my assessment are:– The rock anchors proposed for the foundations were deleted.– The project would benefit greatly from increased use of DfMA methodology and a rationalisation of the design to include DfMA is currently underway. This includes a structural steel option that should achieve a programme saving of 11-12 weeks and a cost saving of approximately $12M.• Recent peer review of high-rise projects includes:– A 100-storey, 320m tall residential building in Melbourne. This project is currently confidential.– Downtown Development in Auckland. Although not high-rise this 40-storey, 168 m tall office building will be the tallest building in New Zealand. My proposal of utilising the fire water tanks on the roofs of the above buildings as tuned sloshing dampers to reduce wind accelerations and improve occupant comfort was adopted by the design team.• Optimisation of structural elements of the redeployable solar-diesel hybrid power plants, which includes the following:– 50% reduction in the weight of steel required for the structural frames.– Investigation into the viability of using FRP in the structural elements.• Cape Lambert B Package 3, WA: In conjunction with WA project engineers, I was responsible for the development of a “Module Temporary Bracing Toolkit.” The “Toolkit” is intended to minimise the amount of temporary transportation steel used in structural steelwork, pre-assembled units (PAUs) in major civil engineering projects. Additionally, composite concrete-filled steel tubes were used in the upper portion of the piles.– My assessment indicated cost savings of many millions of dollars and a 6-month saving in the construction programme for the port facilities.
