Upserve helps more than 10,000 restaurants thrive, processing over $12 billion in annual payment volume. The product suite includes point of sale, analytics, payments and more. Upserve was named to the Forbes 100 list of "America's Most Promising Companies"; "Innovator of the Year" (PBN); "Best Places to Work in Rhode Island" (PBN) every year for over 5 years running, and named by Inc. Magazine as the fastest-growing tech company in Rhode Island. It received the largest venture investment in Rhode Island history from First Round Capital, Index, Greylock, Shasta and Pritzker Group. The company has offices in Providence (HQ), Denver, and New York City.In 2017, Upserve received a strategic equity investment from Vista Equity Partners, in the largest private equity tech transaction in Rhode Island history, allowing me to transition to a board advisor role in 2018, while retaining my ownership in the business. In 2020, Upserve was acquired for more than $500 million in cash and stock by Lightspeed to shape the future of hospitality.

Founded Tellme in 1999 with Mike McCue. Went through many ups and downs, learning experiences and different roles over our journey. Grew business from zero to profitability with over $100 mm in annual revenue from Fortune 100 customers. Shaped software-as-a-service that redefined the industry and changed the way people use their telephone with pioneering speech interfaces. Raised $238 mm from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Benchmark Capital and Jim Barksdale. In 2007, Microsoft acquired Tellme for more than $800 million (at the time, their largest-ever acquisition of a private company). Following the acquisition, I remained at Microsoft for 2 years working on speech recognition strategy.

Led prototyping efforts as part of a small technology strategy group led by then-CTO Marc Andreessen. One interesting "special project" was serving as the technical / product resource to the legal team pursuing the DOJ case against Microsoft (ironic since I would later work for Microsoft). I was product manager for the technology today known as Gecko, the core technology inside the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser. Worked on the AOL merger and the launch of Mozilla.org before leaving to start Tellme.

Led Web site development for medium-sized businesses like radio stations, TV networks and car dealerships (common customer quote: "We need to get on the information super-highway!") that were establishing their initial presence online at the dawn of the Web. Raised the financing for the company from angel investors. Notably, we had a Class B IP address allocation, which was sort of cool looking back nowadays (155.212).
