Established and developed a high end U.S. Tourism sector business that generates an income yield of 40% and capital growth of 20%. Exited with a yield of over 600% over the period. Acquired a portfolio of residential properties and turned them from failing properties into a highly lucrative business achieving 80-90% occupancy rates. We are continuing to expand the business by carefully selecting suitable properties.
SNP Group Leader - 1999-2007Chair - Environmental Services 2000-2007I was in charge of all planning and environmental issues for the Council. During my tenure, the Council implemented the (then) largest ever single capital programme, investing £9m in recycling facilities. This involved a 7-year replacement cycle for waste vehicles, and an overlapping 3-year evaluation process before the investment could even be considered. The Council had to close two landfill sites and transport waste overland to the one remaining site, ensuring that this site remained fully complaint and able to deal with the waste inflows.I was a key participant in the negotiations over the successful bid for Consumer Direct (Scotland) to be located in the Western Isles, working with the Trading Standards Institute, COSLA and the Government Departments to persuade the parties that there was the relevant skills, ability and knowledge to deliver the service from the Western Isles. Our bid was successful and long-term jobs were created.I also sat on the Finance Budget Committee, managing a £100m revenue budget.I represented the Council at the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities on all relevant matters.I often spoke on behalf of the Council and dealt with press enquiries, and was respect as a 'safe paid of hands' in all these areas, being asked by senior officers to reflect the Council views in a coherent and professional manner.I stood down to grow the accountancy practice and enjoy time with our young children.
Elected International President in 2005, I spoke for 6 million people across 9 countries on Environmental matters.I led campaigns against ship-to-ship oil transfers in UK waters; marine pollution, and in particular marine plastics and their impact on marine birdlife.I represented KIMO at the Council of Ministers of the North Sea Convention (Gothenburg 2006) where we worked closely with all the Environment Ministers; and in numerous meetings with the Faroese, UK, Dutch, Swedish and Danish Ministers and officials.I built a working relationship with the EU Commissioner, Stavros Dimas, based on openness and a mix-up over who had organised a conference function!I was also the second-ever Scottish and the UK Chair of KIMO from 2003, following Cllr Jurgen Thomaneck of Aberdeen.
I led the growth of this practice through mergers and acquisitions until it became the largest practice in the locality. I was responsible for developing the IT systems which I did until we were are the cutting edge of accounting firms. Unfortunately, my partners could not see the long term possibilities and wanted to focus on a very local market. Then I discovered that one of my business partners had maladministered two family trusts for almost 10 years losing my family tens of thousand of pounds, and the other partner was covering it up. ICAS duly made a complete mess of the investigation, as detailed at roderickcunningham.WordPress.com, so I made a sharp exit.
