Music CareerAs a session drummer, I supported many greats including David Liebman (Miles Davis), Arno Carstens, Claire Johnson, Ard Matthews, Aviva Pelham, Ezra Ngcukana, Loyiso Bala, and Jimmy Dludlu. Highlights included recording on a SAMA winning album (“Gus is truly a musical drummer, often going further than what is required, showing his skill of rearranging songs on the spot…nobody else can do that”, Arno Carstens), 50th Isle of Wight Festival Festival (UK), South Africa Day in (UAE), Nelson Mandela funeral in Cape Town, MAD Foundation event with Francois Pienaar, Zolani Mahola and the 20-year South African Rock Tour with Francois Van Coke and friends, recording with the Gugulethu Tenors on SABC 3, a residency with John Savage. Film ExperienceIn 2020, my successful band program was honored by local filmmakers by adopting an 80’s Irish cult movie Sing Street to a South African audience and this is where I received my co-directing debut. In 2019 in association with AFDA, I wrote the music for Cannes-nominated student short "You, Me and Everything In-between" heralding South Africa’s 1970’s township jazz aesthetic in this moving feminine fiction piece. In 2016, I served as a sound advisor for The Script’s music video “Highline” and was hired by Ogilvy for on-screen talent in Black Label’s “Hands” advert for the official Soccer World Cup in 2010, directed by Keith Rose. In 2010 my band The Pinkertons provided a track for "Thanks Dad" produced in collaboration for a special Labia Screening. Teaching (2002-2022)Between 2014-2019, I created, hosted, and executed over 35 'safe space' gigs that put hundreds of talented students on the very same circuit that professional artists earn off. In 2015, I created a rental stockpile that earned a return from live performances from professional artists including Matthew Mole, Barry Van Zyl, Peter Erskine, Nick Turner Trio, Sound Foundry, and the film industry. Studio (2019-2022)At present, I create digital media content to educate, inspire and showcase student growth. While leading a small team of teachers, we are unified in creating a safe passage to market by providing training and mentoring to young creatives.
