Thesis: 'Visualization and quantification of tumour biology for personalized radiotherapy'.Functional imaging techniques were used to classify the tumour and examine tumour sub-volumes. The absorption of a labelled drug (89Zr-cetuximab CT), tumour vasculature (dynamic contrast-enhanced CT), tumour metabolism (FDG PET) and tumour oxygen deficiency (hypoxia PET) were measured and tested as markers to determine patient prognoses, to predict the treatment outcome and to adjust radiotherapy treatment plans.Download full-text PhD thesis:https://doi.org/10.26481/dis.20171220ae

Project: 'Optimizing High-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy for the Prostate'. In this project several parts of the prostate cancer treatment procedure were analyzed and possible improvements were evaluated. The accuracy of the registration between ultrasound and cone-beam CT images was assessed, improvements regarding the dose optimization were investigated and the possibility of performing the procedure with only ultrasound images was explored.

Project: 'Accuracy Assessment of a 3D Ultrasound Imaging System for the Thermal Ablation of Liver Tumors'. During the internship dedicated phantoms were made and experiments were performed to validate the accuracy of a mechanical three-dimensional ultrasound scanner, developed to provide improved imaging guidance during liver tumor ablation.

The purpose of the three week study tour was to give a group of 28 students a valuable and educational addition to their official curriculum and an impression of the international developments and procedures in both biomedical engineering and technical medicine. In total 16 companies, universities, research institutes and hospitals were visited, including the University of Tokyo, University of Kyoto, Hitachi Medical, Cyberdyne, Canon and Shimadzu.
