Among other projects, our Parallel Data Architectures Group at UCLA is working on a wireless neural recording system. When Aniket learned about this project, he expressed interest in being part of it on a voluntary basis. I was surprised at his motivation as I knew that he already had enough load carrying his experiments. This engagement would require him spending extra time after his real lab work during the whole summer, yet he was eager to join us desiring to expand his technical expertise. Aniket was to implement a wireless bridge between two communication protocols (proprietary RF and Bluetooth) using the mBed microcontroller platform. He was not familiar with this platform, however, his hard work and dedication helped him overcome the development environment learning curve relatively quickly. Aniket also successfully ensured the proper hardware connections at the communication interfaces. I would touch base with Aniket from time to time and discuss his work progress. He was not shy about expressing his opinion on matters concerning the project, yet he would do this in a sensitive manner and let me take the lead if we happened to disagree. Since I was also busy during the summer, I especially appreciate the maturity and independence with which Aniket executed the project. At the end of the summer Aniket’s hard work paid off and he had a functional wireless bridge, which would translate a proprietary RF communication sent from a PC and send it to a smartphone through a Bluetooth link.
