    Attempting to determine the plausibility of oral transmission of HIV using techniques in molecular biology. It is known that mothers infected with HIV have a 15-20% chance of passing HIV to their offspring via breastfeeding/breastmilk. In simian models, there is evidence that HIV can infect systemically through initial, non-traumatic swabbing of the oral cavity with HIV. We attempt to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which this might occur by using in vitro models to study the interaction between human oral epithelial cells and the HIV virus.
