Department of Otolaryngology:• Conducted research into the neurovestibular compensatory mechanisms in gerbils in simulated microgravity environments.• Results: Support for emerging evidence for a dynamic interplay between sensory modalities and sources of compensatory input, and time, in the neurovestibular compensation process. They suggest that acute contralateral vestibular input does support acute compensation, but that this input might in fact delay chronic compensation.• Principal Investigators: Dr. Shawn D. Newlands and Dr. Galen D. Kaufman. Research funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health:• Performed preliminary study on medical guidelines for orbital space tourists (especially taxi flights to the International Space Station (ISS)) with respect to gastro-intestinal diseases. Proposed practical guidelines for passenger selection.• Results: Concluded that treatment of most gastro-intestinal diseases onboard the ISS can be achieved with a combination of practical countermeasures, monitoring, and onboard equipment, without the need for extra spaceflight hardware.• Principal Investigator: Dr. Anis Karim, under the guidance of Dr. Sheryl L. Bishop.• This was a follow-on to a similar research study I conducted, with respect to cardiovascular and neurological diseases, for which I received the foremost Dr. John L. McLucas Award for the Study of Space Safety (Arthur C. Clarke Foundation) in 2005. The results of both studies are in agreement with, and complement the report of, the Aerospace Medical Association Task Force on Space Travel (2001).
