I am a biotechnologist by training with extensive knowledge and experience in plant and yeast molecular biology and genetic modification, industrial biotechnology (more specifically biochemicals, bioremediation and bioenergy) as well as in project management. My work experience to date was mainly in the agricultural (seventeen years as researcher and project manager for the Agricultural Research Council) and industrial biotechnology sectors (five years as portfolio manager and investment specialist for the Technology Innovation Agency, TIA). My focus areas in industrial biotechnology include product/process development and the commercialisation of high-value biochemicals such as industrial enzymes, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals, etc.. It also includes the areas of bioenergy, waste valuarisation and bioremediation. I believe that I have been making a positive contribution to the South African government’s commitment to technology innovation, and especially in growing the local Bioeconomy.
