I work with a team of public health physicians and other public health professionals to produce educational, empathetic and engaging messages, articles, stories and reports on public health issues relevant to First Nations people in BC. Worked with designers and an advisory council of senior academics to put together the 2014, 2015, and 2016 issues of FNH Magazine, an annual publication that features Indigenous scholars, faculty, staff, and alumni who are making inspirational contributions to the University of Toronto and to their communities. Developed editorial line-up, assigned and edited all articles, wrote some myself, and final reviewed/edited everything before print. Edited and copy edited various publications for Blyth Academy, a private school affiliated with Cambridge University and Queen's University. Also edited various materials for Blyth's scholarship programs and charitable foundation. This client offers amazing, creative, educational programs in exotic destinations; students stay at four- or five-star hotels while learning and earning credits. Managed editorial projects, including two annual reports and five issues of the Ontario Lawyers' Gazette, which is the Law Society's magazine for all of Ontario's lawyers and judges. This included everything from developing the editorial line-up to recruiting contributors to assisting them with finalizing their articles, to writing some and final-editing all English articles or sections. Also wrote speaking notes for the Treasurer, executive communications (internal and external) for both the Treasurer and the CEO, press releases, internal and external website feature articles about the many events and panels hosted by the Law Society, etc. Was offered a permanent position after this extended full-time contract, but left to work more than full-time and in-house for McCarthy Tétrault LLP. Wrote speeches for H&K's diverse clientele, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, CEOs, etc. Final-edited / wrote various materials, including proposals, press releases, ad copy, case studies, etc. Also occasionally assisted with H&K client events, which are always fun and creative. Worked mostly from home on a regular freelance basis while attending university and raising my son. H&K was my main client; others included the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation (now Indspire) in Toronto and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation in Ottawa. This four-month (summer student) contract led to an unsolicited permanent job offer from the ICC, which I accepted instead of returning to school in September as planned. Before moving to Vancouver for school and becoming a writer, I worked for several years as a group home youthcare worker in Prince George, BC and as a daycare worker in Whistler, BC.
