As Executive Director of MicroMentor, the world's leading online community for free business mentoring, I am a social entrepreneur and a senior leader at Mercy Corps—influencing organizational culture and evolved leadership at the agency level while balancing strategic planning, business development, technological innovation, and partnership growth. I have over 20 years of combined social entrepreneurship, nonprofit/NGO, and corporate management experience across a wide spectrum of industries and countries. I am committed to seeing a world where mentoring paves the path for equitable and democratized access to social capital for entrepreneurs. I regularly speak publicly about and share insights on mentoring, transformative leadership, and the use of technology for social good and systems level change for gender equity at local, national, and global forums like the World Bank, Skoll World Forum, and the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs. I am a passionate champion for gender equity and racial justice. At the age of 22, I cofounded SAWERA, a nonprofit that helped South Asian women and children affected by domestic violence, developing a direct service and systems level program towards the aim of education and zero tolerance to gender based violence. I chair the People of Color Affinity Group at Mercy Corps, where I promote equity in practice and in systems, and the embodiment of these values at all levels of the organization. Prior to joining Mercy Corps, I managed Operations for Xerox’s North American channel marketing and eCommerce divisions. I serve on several nonprofit boards, including Relay Resources, a social enterprise employing more than 700 people with disabilities, and the Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation, the fundraising arm of a federally qualified health center serving low-income and uninsured patients across a network of clinics. From grassroots advocacy to business operations to global social enterprise, my motivation comes from building something up from a modest place beyond what anyone thought possible. I seek to inspire those around me, cultivating the conditions that allow my team to do the best work of their lives. Social impact and transformative change is never easy, so why not have fun doing it? I am happy to share what I’m learning and constantly learn from others with similar interests and passions. Please reach out if you’d like to connect.

Executive Director, Micromentor|Creating A Global Network For Economic Opportunity Through MentoringMercy Corps Sep 2012 - PresentPortland, Or, UsAs the leader of MicroMentor (MM) at Mercy Corps, I’ve been privileged to lead the transformation of a regional program with limited reach into an international social enterprise. Today, MM connects thousands of volunteer business mentors with hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs with a focus on the Global South. We’ve earned broad recognition as a credible leader in the field of mentoring and an agent of change in creating economic opportunity for women, in particular. Our vision and strategies have engaged diverse partners and communities in the mission to democratize access to social capital for under-resourced entrepreneurs in dozens of countries. Much of this success comes from embracing technology and a systems change approach. In addition to reaching dramatic scale, we worked with partners to launch the world’s first mentoring mobile app and refine an innovative Mentoring-as-a-Service (MaaS) model that creates value for corporate, government, and nonprofit partners. All of this is leading to significant job creation and retention, a key measure of success. I first joined MM as Senior Partnerships Officer, a position I held for about 4 years. Since then, I’ve grown our staff to 3 dozen talented professionals and fostered a values-driven, results-focused, and forward-looking culture. I’ve cultivated a diverse donor network that includes foundations, global brands, and development agencies in the U.S., EMEA, Latin America, and Asia. I executed an earned income strategy, quadrupling our annual budget with earned income from contracts contributing about half of our revenue. And I’ve elevated MM’s stature within Mercy Corps and globally, demonstrating localization in action, operational efficiency, and a transformative model for impact and scale within an INGO.In the face of global threats that can compound existing inequalities, I am working to ensure our offerings reflect an understanding of how gender, climate, and economic opportunity intersect. -
Cofounder & President Of A Grassroots Organization Addressing Gender-Based ViolenceSawera May 1997 - Mar 2013SAWERA promotes the independence and dignity of South Asian women through education, empowerment, and solidarity. Originally a grassroots nonprofit, today it is part of the Domestic Violence Resource Center. After moving to the Portland area, I was part of a group of women who saw a pressing need to bring support to South Asian women experiencing domestic and gender-based violence in our community. Collectively motivated by a drive for justice, we founded a grassroots organization to do something about it. We bootstrapped initial operations and were able to expand the organization’s base of support and mission impact by raising awareness and offering culturally sensitive services through partnerships with aligned nonprofit organizations and the legal community. Over the course of 15 years, I was most influential in establishing and refining our foundational charter and in fundraising, assisting with grant applications and organizing annual galas that generated 40% of the organization’s revenue. -
Operations Manager, Ecommerce And Channel MarketingXerox 2008 - 2012Norwalk, Connecticut, UsI joined Xerox after leaving Daimler when my division relocated to South Carolina. For about 3 years I worked in Channel Marketing, rising from analyst to manager of a 6-person onshore/offshore operations team responsible for a portfolio of reseller incentive and rebate programs. I managed a $40M annual budget, $13M in vendor contracts, and data integrity, analysis, and reporting. I was then recruited and moved to Xerox’s $50M eCommerce division to provide leadership for strategic priorities including a rebuild of the entire xerox.com store. In that role, I managed project life cycles and piloted product launches. A few highlights from my time at Xerox:- Established a division-wide reporting system that provided internal stakeholders with access to critical fulfillment data.- Boosted revenue by spearheading an operational overhaul of 50 B2B eCommerce channels.- Realized $750,000 annually in savings by identifying duplicate and erroneous payments.- Produced a marketing dashboard at a fraction of the projected cost, resulting in significant savings and operational efficiencies. - Slashed the turnaround time for cleansed data from an average of 14 to 5 days.- Passed all quarterly audits with 100% accuracy. -
