As first transportation coordinator for Opportunity Green, I implemented and delivered green travel initiatives for the 2011 Opportunity Green Conference, which included priority parking for ride-sharers and discount car service rates with a company that only dispatches environmentally friendly cars. I collaborated with transportation companies and services, partnering hotels, and the Opportunity Green team in order to coordinate environmentally responsible transportation options for the event that will adhere to values of a sustainable business while ensuring efficiency for all participants. Most importantly, I ensured that these efforts are publicized and communicated to the attendees by informing them through website and dashboard. Another important aspect to my role is assisting the research and the data collection for the sustainability report for the stakeholders. As one of the 18 resident adivsors at Scripps who served as the liaisons between students, maintenance & grounds department, and administration, I helped ensure a safe and supportive living environment for 80 residents by mediating any disputes between residents, assisting in facility management issues, and taking appropriate action during unexpected emergencies. I organized more than 15 community, health, diversity, and academic programs on a limited budget of $75 per semester. I received a grant from Scripps College to be involved in non-profit work in Kathmandu Nepal. One of the work I ended up doing is helping out in the office of a school/home for children who are affected by HIV/AIDS. I helped out with translating formal documents, brochures, and other publications into English so that it could be shared with its diverse Board and other supporters. Punarbal Plus provides a well-rounded education to the kids who otherwise could not have been able to receive due to the negative stigma against this disease, including those not even personally infected but have immediate family members that are. It is also a home for the students, where a care-mother is there to assist those with special needs and to ensure that they all maintain a healthy lifestyle that all children should be able to have. For my main project with the grant I received from Scripps College, I taught English to ethnic minorities and refugees at the Himalayan Society for Youth and Women Empowerment. The majority of my classes middle-age, working women who never received a formal education before. Many are illiterate in both English and Nepali. For many, learning English would not only be helpful for their own career but also empowering for all aspects of daily life because only Nepali and English are officially… Show more For my main project with the grant I received from Scripps College, I taught English to ethnic minorities and refugees at the Himalayan Society for Youth and Women Empowerment. For many, learning English would not only be helpful for their own career but also empowering for all aspects of daily life because only Nepali and English are officially recognized for formal or legal transactions in Nepal. I had to be creative with my methodology and communication skills in teaching English effectively and enjoyably in order to overcome the language barrier since I do not speak a common language with my students. It was a challenge, but the results were encouraging. I was very proud in clear and steady improvement among my students regarding their skill and their confidence in mastering the language.
