SHARE/WHEEL is a grassroots organizing effort of homeless and formerly homeless men and women. I have been a participant since October of 1995, stayed active after getting housing in 1996. Elected to Board of Directors in 1996, elected President not long after that; however, SHARE & WHEEL are egalitarian democracies in which everyone attending our weekly Board meetings has an equal voice and equal vote. I have helped start shelters, tent cities, a transitional housing project (the Bunkhouse) and a permanent housing project (Dorothy Day House). I am a founding member of the WHEEL/Church of Mary Magdalene Women in Black, which stands vigil whenever a homeless person dies outside or by violence anywhere in King County, and of the Homeless Remembrance Project, which is creating a Tree of Life in Victor Steinbrueck Park and Leaves of Remembrance on sidewalks across Seattle, as sites of beauty, hope and healing to honor the lives, and deaths, of homeless people. I am one of the poets in Beloved Community: A Sisterhood of Homeless Women in Poetry, an anthology of poetry from WHEEL chapbooks and the first national publication of poetry entirely by homeless and formerly homeless women.
