About Anja Aarva

I enjoy working with truly multidisciplinary topics and I believe in data driven decision making. In my latest field of research I have aimed to combine computational simulations with high quality experimental data. This approach together with the mindset of research scientist can be applied to almost any field. I have done experimental research in the past and more recently I have employed high power computing as well as novel machine learning based methods to better understand the structure and characterization of various materials and phenomena. My role and ambition is to be a versatile expert who can understand and unite the best sides of computational, statistical and experimental data in order to add value to business and to find creative solutions to be used in high technology applications. In my personal life I spend time with my family (two kids, born 2010 and 2013, and husband). I also enjoy traveling, exploring outdoors and doing sports such as yoga and pilates. Now that I have completed my doctoral studies I’m taking some to find my next ambition.

Tavoitteena on tietojohtamisen kypsyystason kasvattaminen. Tutkijan taustani on tukenut monipuolista työnkuvaani ja olen päässyt laajentamaan osaamistani luonnontieteistä humanististen tieteenalojen pariin.Strategiaosaston organisaatiomuutoksen myötä vaihdoin uuteen tiimiin: ICT-johtamisen tukeen.
  • Aalto University
    Doctoral Candidate
    Aalto University Nov 2015 - Dec 2022
    Espoo, Finland
I worked in a truly multidisciplinary Microsystems Technology group. The group focuses on sensor development for neurotransmitter detection. In my research I have combined computational simulations with high quality experimental data in order to shed light on material characterization (X-ray spectroscopy) as well as to better understand the phenomena that take place during electrochemical measurements. In my simulations I have employed density functional theory (DFT) and novel machine learning (ML) based methods. My role and ambition was to be a versatile expert who can understand and unite the best sides of both: computational and experimental science.
  • Enea Italian National Board For Energy, New Technologies And The Environment
    Research Scientist
Enea Italian National Board For Energy, New Technologies And The Environment Oct 2008 - Apr 2009
    Casaccia Research Centre, Italy
I was present at ENEA between 10/2008-04/2009, but the work was done between 2008-2010. This was made possible by two personal grants provided by Finnish Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation. Main tasks of my working period at ENEA were an extensive review of state-of-the-art materials for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) components and, based on the review, a report of novel innovative methods for coating and improving active SOFC components. Results of this work were summarized in a couple of international publications. I continued collaborating with ENEA as a freelance writer after moving to Singapore. In this work I was able to take few steps from not just making science towards suggesting guidelines for future focuses.
  • Vtt Technical Research Centre Of Finland
    Research Scientist
Vtt Technical Research Centre Of Finland May 2006 - Feb 2008
    Espoo, Finland
Working at VTT taught me how to be a research scientist. I got plenty of experience and general knowledge of how to make science. And of course I learned a lot about my topic: fuel cell technologies. I started my work at VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) as a trainee and soon after continued as a research scientist. Some results of my work were published in my master’s thesis and in the 10th International Symposium on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC-X) in Japan, but I mainly reported the results for internal use. Generally my work consisted of single cell characterization, testing and reporting for EU projects such as Real-SOFC, SOFC600 and FCTESQA as well as several other tasks in the fuel cell laboratory. In my work good IT skills were essential. Creative and analytical mindset together with good problem solving skills were absolutely necessary.
