About Anja Koenig

I work on impact finance, business models with a societal impact and societal innovation. I facilitate system change initiatives, collective impact and blended value partnerships for impact. I enjoy helping bring new ideas to life and connect necessary resources and people to make it happen. I am inspired by the potential of entrepreneurship, innovation and capital to address tough societal challenges at scale and sustainably. I hope to make a small contribution to the much needed paradigm shift in the way we do business, take financing decisions and act as leaders in our societies!I work with partners from public, private, social and academic sector in Germany, Europe and emerging countries globally. At EVPA (now Impact Europe) I co-initiated Investing for Development, set up EVPAs Transformative Finance Initiaitve and led the design of a Transformative Finance Lab, a space to co-create financing solutions for impact. I founded Social Impact Markets in 2012 to build the field of impact investment, to promote sustainable entrepreneurship and to help governments and impact funders design interventions that create innovative and more effective (finance) solutions to complex development challenges. I am a 2019 graduate of the one year Generative Facilitation Certificate Program that supports system leaders and groups with successfully navigating innovation and change for greater impact. I am also trained in Theory U, systems practice methodologies, Arts of Hosting and Design Thinking and benefited from trainings in (female) leadership, mentoring and starting up a business. I am mentor with On Purpose to help mid term professionals with their career transition to impact and with MentorMe supporting women with personal and career choices. Now based in Berlin, Germany I worked and lived in various countries in (Eastern) Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as Turkey. I always look for opportunities to connect and meet like-minded people!

    EVPA (now Impact Europe) is a leading European impact finance network (www.evpa.ngo) that promotes (peer) learning, connection and partnerships amongst its members, partners and the broader community. I had the opportunity to initiate and develop a number of new emerging initiatives: Impact Europe's Transformative Finance Initiative to explore and strengthen the role of capital in system change, the organisation's first award scheme in 2021, the CoLab Award as well as the development of EVPA Transformative Finance Lab, a new space to rethink impact finance and co-create innovative financing solutions for societal challenges. I also co-initiated EVPAs Investing for Development in order to bring the international development finance and European impact finance community closer together, strengthen our ties with EVPAs sister networks in Latam, Africa and Asia and explore lessons learned in catalytic capital, impact linked finance and other forms of innovative development finance and its application for Europe. I also supported our members in their work acting as a sounding board and strategic advisor to some of them. I fostered valuable connections, facilitated peer learning and co-creation opportunities, delivered the EVPA introduction training (in German) and spoke at numerous occasions on trends and developments in the impact investing eco-system in DACH region, Europe and beyond.

    Social Impact Markets launched Finance for Change (F4C) in cooperation with the Impact Hub Berlin. The idea was to inspire, to facilitate connections, learning and networking opportunities for investors interested in impact investing. F4C offered a series of successful Investor Bootcamps to financial institutions, foundations, angel investors, development agencies, government officials and intermediaries. We were able to attract leading impact investing practitioners to share their knowledge and provide a cutting edge learning experience - the first of its kind in Germany.

    The objective of the Social Investment Program at the SU Entrepreneurship Centre in Istanbul supported by the JP Morgan Chase Foundation was to both inspire potential investors to engage in the impact investing field and to strengthens the capacity of social ventures to scale and attract investment. We also supported the nascent social impact community in Turkey and connected local players internationally. The program was designed to offer a co-funding mechanism and to support first time venture philanthropists and social investors through a mentoring program with peers from more advanced social investment eco-systems in Europe and the US. I initiated, designed and developed the SIP program from the beginning. This included the development of an engagement strategy, the establishment of network partners, a pool of local and international mentors, awareness and networking events and social media communications. I also identified and engaged leading international impact investing practitioners, co-designed the training curriculum with them and delivered parts of the training to social entrepreneurs, impact professionals and (aspiring) social investors.

    I was fellow of the Impact Investing Policy Collaborative funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and benefited from a research fellowship by the German Mercator Foundation hosted at Sabanci University in Istanbul/Turkey. For a review of the regulatory framework I also benefited from legal support through the TrustLaw Connect Program of the Thomson Reuters Foundation. In this capacity I analysed needs of impact entrepreneurs, identified gaps and proposed ways to support the development of impact investing eco-system and the speific role of government in market building. It was one of the first research pieces on this topic globally and remains a key reference for the social entrepreneurship and impact investing field in Turkey.
