About Angela Chang

I am interested in changing the world by developing storytelling technology that encourages people to be more collaborative and creative. I am currently working on 1) TinkerStories (apps for parents to explore literacy with their young children through shared storytelling) , 2) teaching young people to use technologies for creative exploration, and 3) wearable textiles. My primary research areas are haptics, storytelling, and education. My three product domains are apps, haptic prototypes, and wearables.TinkerStories are gesturally-controlled narratives that allow readers to change the words in a narrative. TinkerStories are designed to help parents teach reading in a fun and personal way. The technology encourages kids to play with words in order to learn how words function. The app encourages parents and children to make up stories together and discuss language concepts in depth. The technology has been tested, and results seem to show that anyone can enjoy using a tinkerstory to learn to read. It's effective, fun, and engaging. Based on my Ph.D. research at the MIT Media Lab, I believe TinkerStories is a new way children to learn to read.I teach research and creative production in atelier-style learning environments. I have three MIT degrees and contributed to 15 years of student culture at MIT. As a live-in tutor for six years on the East Side of MIT's Campus, I mentored hundreds of undergraduates in the art of living curiously. I like to tinker, and I want to pass on the skills of passion-driven learning to the next generation. I've thought a lot about how to design systems that help people who are not "hackers" to get started with tinkering. I want everyone to be a maker, a thinker, and scholar capable of changing the world. TinkerStories is my first foray into designing something for the world that can help people become the future leaders of tomorrow.I am interested in building useful and pretty things and sharing the adventure with the people I care about. I am a hacker, inventor, artist, engineer, programmer, gamer, builder, daughter, sister, and mother.
