Mombasa, Kenya

Residential captains are student leaders who organize events and activities for the students part of the residential community at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa. The position of a residential captain is earned by few students who demonstrate academic excellence and voluntary work as part of the community and service program or during residential events. The ability to work in a team for this role was crucial as there were approximately 150-200 students involved in the major events held each year, and the 24 residential captains had to organize and execute each event. Some activities that were organized include, bucket-ball tournaments, awards night and talent night. As a residential captain I also made friendships through the team-building sessions and weekly meetings held to discuss plans for future events.

Karachi, Pakistan

Worked at South City Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, based in four different departments over the course of four weeks. The first week I spent in the laboratory which included: Chemistry, Microbiology and Hematology departments. The next few weeks I worked in the Pharmacy departments, in Physiotherapy and in Radiology, consecutively. Each of these departments were very different and gave me exposure to four different branches of medicine in a short four weeks. This internship gave me insight into life in the field of medicine. By interacting with the doctors and nurses at South City I have a clear idea of their daily duties at work along with the understanding of a job in a hospital environment.

The Tuck Shop is a student led business that serves to provide food and beverages to the student body. Being part of the executive team required teamwork to ensure the events planned are a success and the objectives are met. As the HR manager of this business, my responsibilities included weekly meetings with both teams and creating rotas for the students working shifts. I was also responsible for resolving any conflicts that occurred between sales representatives, or customers and sales representatives. This particular responsibility helped me develop problem solving skills that I know are crucial and applicable to any workplace environment.
