Title: A study of the paleo-hydrological and climatic conditions inferred from lake sediments' carbon and oxygen isotopic values.I did an extensive literature survey on the use of δ13C values of lacustrine carbonates and organic matter in lake sediments to infer past vegetation, climate, and rainfall. I also studied the use of δ18O values to infer the past temperature fluctuations, the ratio of inflow to evaporation in the lake, and estimate the mean isotopic composition of rainfall in the catchment (in case of an open lake or short residence time lake). I also learned how the value of the correlation coefficient of δ13C and δ18O in lacustrine carbonates infer the lake's hydrological closure. Finally, I learned about the Holocene climatic changes (using the above-mentioned parameters) and the forcing behind these changes, using some of the available literature on the important lake located in India's different geomorphic and climatic zones.

Title: Shale Gas Potential of Barren Measures Shale in the Damodar Valley Basin.I was given an overview of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, mainly Coal Bed Methane and Shale Gas. I learned about the process of formation and extraction of these unconventional hydrocarbons, laboratory and microscope studies of the source rock to access their hydrocarbon generation potential, determination of in-situ hydrocarbon content, and recoverable hydrocarbon reserve. I did literature studies to find the Shale Gas Potential of Barren Measures Shale in the Damodar Valley Basin, emphasizing the Raniganj sub-basin and West-Bokaro sub-basin.
