Curriculum Coordinator At Mentoring The Pipeline

Mentoring the Pipeline is an organization that provides direct mentorship by WFSOM medical students to undergraduate students at Wake Forest University in their path to medicine. As curriculum coordinator I hope to curate and communicate monthly topics that we encourage mentors to address at appropriate times over the course of the year. Through my time at the University of Pittsburgh I have engaged in a variety of activities, all of which have opened my eyes to the fact that senior citizens often live in a separated island of society. With our generation's advances in technology and adoption of a fast-paced lifestyle, senior citizens often find themselves alone and unable to assimilate. With this in mind, I worked with a team of like-minded students to build this non-profit organization whose mission is to connect this vulnerable population to high-school and college students around the Pittsburgh area through volunteer opportunities. Future initiatives include piloting a Virtual Reality program to improve the general mood of senior citizens and a Pre-School readers program to facilitate intergenerational engagement. Our mission is to be a centralized provider of services to senior nursing/living facilities by improving the lives of senior citizens in the Pittsburgh area through the use of inter-generational interaction and technological literacy.

PI: Dr. Judy Chang, MD, MPHPrimary Focus of Study: Illicit substance use, patient-provider communication, and women's health during pregnancy. Extracted information from patient charts, focusing on initial, final, and Post-Partum visits, related to drug use, marijuana use, smoking, breast feeding, contraception, and social service use with the aim to characterize associations among various trends in behavior. Coded transcribed audio recordings using a qualitative analysis method to compare discussion methods used by providers to the guidelines provided by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. My current project is to identify the association between breast feeding intention and preferred method of contraception. This past summer through the Magee-Womens College Summer Internship I extracted pertinent information from 167 patient charts of pregnant patients who either have a history or do not have a history of substance use but are not currently using illicit substances during their pregnancy. Through this data I found an association between breastfeeding intention and preferred method of contraception. Furthering this study, I will be looking at the patient population who used marijuana, tobacco, or opioids during their pregnancy to characterize this trend and identify any discrepancies. Other projects include a study of the extent to which family history is dissected during prenatal visits and the approach to which contraceptive methods are offered to patients.
