Anna Alvarez is a PhD Student at the University of California Santa Barbara. She is proficient in Polish, Spanish and Japanese. Colleagues describe her as "Anna was among the top students of the semester when I taught her in ECE 206 - Electrical and Electronic Circuits. She was one of the students who sat nearest the blackboard and engaged in the lecture, willing to raise her hand when I posed questions to the class. She and her partner were both hard workers, and through the course of the semester learned to troubleshoot the circuit problems they encountered that left their peers stumped and waiting for TA rescue. In my class, she gained beginner-level practice with the following topics: Methodical troubleshooting, oscilloscope and other electrical equipment use, RC circuits, logic and encoders, Arduino programming, BJT and MOSFET transistors as amplifiers, pulse-width modulation, feedback control, interrupt handling, instrumentation and unit conversion, analog-to-digital converters, digital-to-analog conversion, H-bridge motor direction control, and accelerometers."

Throughout the summer CNF REU program, I developed reactive, origami patterned, liquid crystal films for micro robotic applications. It is challenging to create complex microrobots today as we lack materials and fabrication techniques to chose from. I created a new liquid crystal precursor that could be patterned and actuated using microfabrication technologies. I gained experience using general chemistry hoods in Cornell’s cleanroom facility, and equipment such as Contact Aligners, Mask Writers, Plasma Etchers, and Silicon Etchers.

Throughout the summer, I have helped develop high speed linear scanners for use in COMPMRI, or COncurrent MultiPhoton microscopy and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A multimodal technique developed by the Xu Research Group, COMPMRI combines fMRI and three photon microscopy to simultaneously take scans of a mouse brain. To prevent interference with magnetic fields, we redesigned the actuator used in three photon microscopy to be driven by trimorph piezoelectrics and to be made without metal components. Experience in operating function generators and oscilloscopes has also been acquired.

Under this group, I analyzed trabecular and subchondral bones of sheep to determine how joint thickness and density correlates with the individual’s gait during life. These joint properties were determined using the 3D modeling software, Amira, along with MatLab and ImageJ.
