Studied the mechanism of electron transfer (ET) in the disease-relevant human enzyme sulfite oxidase. Intramolecular ET between the metal centers is critical for enzymatic function, but conformational changes are required for efficient ET. The two metal domains are connected by a flexible polypeptide tether that may facilitate conformational changes. Elucidated the role of tether dynamics in modulating ET rate and enzyme function.

By interacting with galectins on the surface of cancer cells, modified pectin is believed to both induce apoptosis of cancer cells and decrease the occurrence of metastasis. Pectinase enzymes can be used to alter pectin for desirable pharmacological characteristics. Worked to clone and assay two homologous pectinase enzymes as well as treated and purified pectin for in vivo cancer assays.
