Anna Bates, Make Make’s Co-Founder, is driven to spaces and places that engage all publics and seek to surprise, delight, and inform with a focus on creating human connections, supporting values, and making that transcends time. Her approach is influenced by her early career designing sets for commercials and plays. Beyond honing her abilities to making decisions rapidly and produce work very quickly with large teams, this early experience taught her how to use spatial design to communicate and always leave room for change, for imponderables, for growth. Her subsequent architectural work expanded these notions to satisfy a more profound need to create designs with lasting impact. From transforming an old factory into a museum designed to beckon new visitors and regenerate a neighborhood, to renovating a historic telegraph building into modern offices where color and outdoor spaces cater to a new generation of office workers, or designing a network of modular pitstops along a mountain highway that takes into account varying climate zones and bird migration patterns, Anna’s design work is not defined by typology but by the challenge to create human experiences. Consciously detailed at all levels, her projects strive to unite sensations, moods, and ideas into one coherent whole that sustains balanced human existence for productivity, for health, and for humanity.Make Make culture is rooted in fostering inclusive, vibrant urban spaces through architecture and design. THE INCEPTION IS A COLLABORATIVE EXPERIMENTAL BOOK, WHICH EMPHASIZES A NEW WAY OF THINKING ABOUT AUTHORSHIP, COLLECTIVE CREATION, INSPIRATION AND IDEAS.The experiment documented in the INCEPTION book is, indeed, an open-ended exercise in art and creation, yet it points to a bigger social, political and economic problem—namely, how dated the current dominant approach to authorship is. By focusing so much on individual authorship—and so little on the shared nature of inspiration—we ourselves succumb to exhausting conflicts about ownership and leave less energy to creation itself. How did this come into being? Why should we care? And can it be fixed?
