When interviewers ask about your greatest achievement, I think most teachers are stumped to answer because for us, it's the light bulb that lights up when our students 'get' a tricky concept. It's empowering. Explaining something well is the equivalent of a successful surgery - we did it, and there's no need for extra stitches.When I chose to study my Bachelor's, I was focusing on my love for books and the manipulation of language, which was ignited by my English teacher. Now, I share this love with my own students, and the insight from kids in France, South Korea, Madagascar, and now Vietnam has been like my own private study abroad programme, with my students as mentors.Having the experience of teaching a range of ages, from kindergarten to adult, I've discovered that I most thrive in those teenage waters where behaviour is unpredictable, and emotions run high. English Language Arts and Literature need the passion, crave the drama, and ultimately survive in tumultuous, melancholic conditions.I mean yeah, everyone knows that when the poet reveals that the curtains are blue, they could just be blue for the sake of the rhyme, but isn't it more fun to speculate? A classroom, after all, is where the magic happens.
