Sponsoring, direct and indirect donations and political connections, proxied by external consultants and internal lobbyists, are taken into account. An array of differences between intensity and probability of these actions has been detected. Size, for example, plays only a role for direct donations and sponsoring and profitability only for direct donations.Of particular interest is the finding that not financial ratios but rather sector affiliation is crucial for the intensity of political actions. Firms of the utilities and automobile sector, for example, are much better politically connected; pharmaceutical and chemical firms donate more indirectly; whereas automobile firms donate more directly and sponsor more compared to other firms. Striking is the result that firms of which the state owns 25 percent or more, i.e., firms that are legally not allowed to donate, circumvent the law by spending more money on sponsoring. This finding calls for new laws concerning the regulation of sponsoring by (partially) state-owned firms. Show less
