I qualified as a primary teacher in 2020 and began my probationary period in August. Probationary Period (Aug 20-June 21)Skills I demonstrated during this period:Flexibility- I taught primary 7, which was a stage that I was brand new to, to help meet the needs of the school.Communication- I gained experience communicating with older children, other practitioners, members of the Senior Leadership Team, and parents/carers.Time management- I had to effectively manage my time to balance my various responsibilities including marking, teaching, communication with parents, and training.Adaptive- I had to adapt the way that I was teaching to meet the needs of the learners in my class and to meet the standards expected from the SLT and the council.Hardworking- I demonstrated my strong work ethic during this period and volunteered to support the wider life of the school. For example, I volunteered to lead an initiative with local care homes and attended school fun nights.First-year qualified (Aug 21-June 22)During this year I provided CCC cover to Primary 1 and 2. This built upon previous experience teaching in the infant stages. I further developed the skills above as well as some additional ones.Evidence Management- I learned how to evidence my children's learning. I learned about recording evidence using different formats and assessments, which was different from previous schools that I had worked in.Behaviour management- I further developed this skill during my second year of teaching. I learned about a new school's behaviour management strategy and used this and my own strategies to create a positive learning environment within my class. 2nd Year Qualified (Sept 22-Dec 22)During this period I took on various supply roles within South Lanarkshire council. This involved me being very organsied and prepared in advance. I ensured that I always came with appropriate resources and pre-planned lessons in case the teacher had not left work for the children. I also gained further experience across all stages of the primary sector. 2nd Year Qualified (Jan 23-June 23)During this period I took over as the Primary 7 teacher. I was responsible for planning, assessing, and supporting learners of 11 and 12 years of age. I was also in charge of communicating with the high school regarding transitions. I initially took on this role full time to cover staff absences.
