Their first trip, recorded in their best selling book 20,000 Miles South, spanned from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego (1954-1956). They continued traveling, writing and photographing for National Geographic through 1970, filming much of their adventures. Helen was sometimes banned from walking in the front door of the places where she spoke about her travels, and was not allowed to join the Explorers Club because she was a woman.
