Whenever I say that I have a bachelor's degree in English, I'm always asked if I want to be a writer. Funnily enough, I actually don't like writing all that much (probably in part due to the many 15+ page essays I wrote throughout my higher education). However, even though I don't like actually doing the writing, I love helping other people make their writing better.As the many students who gave me their work to peer review will attest to, I take editing very seriously, but it's because I truly enjoy doing it. There's something very appealing about having a hard-and-fast rule about the way things should be; but it's even more exhilarating when you get to break those rules on purpose or when you get to create your own rule where academia has left a gap.At the heart of all my editing endeavors, no matter what genre they may be in, is advocacy for both the audience and the writer. Everyone always says that an editor's purpose is to be the audience's voice, but I think this often erases the equally important relationship between the writer and the editor. Although I edit to ensure that the audience understands what they're reading, I also edit constantly with the writer in mind, making sure that their voice and their intention still shines through in the final product.I've edited a huge range of genres, including newspaper content, home improvement blogs, dissertations, creative writing, and many, many academic papers. But my proudest achievement of all was leading the copy desk at The Rocky Mountain Collegian to a 0.46% error rate. Nothing makes all the long nights in the newsroom seem more worth it than that.
