The Mayor of London Cultural Impact Award and the Royal Borough of Kingston, “Cirkt” was developed as a response to the crisis facing London's grassroots music sector and the challenges facing this outer London borough’s fragile night-time economy.Role: Strategic programme lead across development and delivery, working with local communities to create and shape the programme, (collaborating with Kingston University, grassroots music spaces, local businesses, residents and workers), the programme delivered specialist business support, live music events, public conferences, workshops, mentoring and professional development training, to support and improve the sustainability of the local grassroots music sector and to help raise the profile of music and the night-time economy within the borough.Additionally, working in partnership with Kingston Music Hub, I led on securing match funding from Arts Council to deliver the borough's first youth consultation research programme, supporting the creation of a youth forum, who devised the borough’s inaugural, youth-led contemporary music event, ‘Next Gen’, providing essential baseline data and evidence to support the borough wide, youth arts service strategy. Via professional network secured six high profile music ambassadors including Mobo nominated Novelist, BBC The Rap Game juror, Laura Brosnan, independent venue owner and music agency founder, Tom Baker (Eat Your Own Ears/Field Day Festival), Mercury Prize nominated Dave Maclean (Django Django/Damon Albarn /Africa Express) and secured access to world leading producers and recording studio time at Europe’s premiere music studio, Strongroom partnering with leading music producers (Rolling Stones, Queens of the Stone Age, Stormzy, Amy Winehouse.) Working with Westminster City Council, resident and business stakeholders, including major landowners and businesses, (Soho Estates, Shaftesbury, NIMAX Theatres, Soho Housing, New West End Company) and following extensive community consultations to test policy direction, the draft Plan influenced the emerging new Westminster City Plan, which adopted a number of its policies and the proposal of a SPA (Special Policy Area) for Soho. My role has also included supporting members to navigate and develop CIL proposals for the Neighbourhood Area; working with consultants Publica and AECOM, who are providing design, planning and research support and securing public (Westminster City Council, Groundworks/Central Government) and private sector funding. The Soho Neighbourhood Area is a unique and important part of London with a distinguished heritage. The proposed Soho Neighbourhood Plan will enable development which reinforces Soho’s reputation for creativity, diversity and tolerance. These characteristics are demonstrated in many ways, for example through the range of businesses, from sole traders to big household names, through its varied and strong residential communities and through its diverse culture and entertainment offer. Soho is developing a Neighbourhood Plan to protect this diverse mix and also enable some further growth which sustainably enhances what is already a complexly developed area. Show less
