Since meeting the artist Hayley Mills-Styles during my placement year at Leeds Playhouse, I have been employed on a freelance basis to support some of her textile art workshops across Leeds and Bradford. Most recently, this has involved creating a community banner in Bradford to celebrate the opening of Ken Loach’s new film ‘The Old Oak’. This has expanded my hand sewing and embroidery skills, combined with experiencing a different form of community engagement through visual art.

Over the summer of 2022 I worked as a GP receptionist, collaborating with a large team of receptionists and medical practitioners to ensure patient admin was processed. I learnt to use the medical system SystemOne in less than a month, took patient calls, processed and triaged information and queries, redacted child abuse files and communicated with ESOL patients. It was challenging, but up-skilled me in areas I hadn’t explored previously.

During my second year of university I worked the Autumn/Winter season as a dresser at Opera North, first dressing the female chorus of ‘Carmen’, then additionally dressing the male chorus of ‘Rigoletto’. I learned to have excellent time management, which is essential for quick changes, fine tuned my customer service and listening skills, and up skilled my knowledge of costume and how a wardrobe department runs. I was often the first and last staff member the singers would interact with each evening, and I made sure always to be the friendly and organised person they could rely on.

After my A levels were cancelled due to Covid-19 I joined ECCH as a cleaner contracted to clean NHS clinics and GP surgeries. I learnt to work efficiently to a time constraint, infection control, clinical waste handling and how to clean to NHS standards.
