I made such a positive impact and notable contribution in my first role at UCL for a global centre of research excellence that I was offered an opportunity to act-up into a more senior role. The chance to stretch my professional capabilities and develop leadership skills really appealed, and I made a natural transition into the role of Unit Manager very quickly. As a member of the senior management team, I was responsible for leading core business operations and internal communications with direct responsibility for a research support & administration function and indirect responsibility for +250 employees. My open two-way communication style and the positive relationships I had established across the wider university and with external partners enabled me to bring immediate value to the role. They were definite strengths of mine in project managing a complex 5-year funding review in which I aided clarity and generated momentum in the project’s delivery.Working on projects that enhanced the employee experience inspired me the most and I enjoyed every opportunity to collaborate with HR and information services teams in finding solutions that improved processes, embedded new tools and approaches, and promoted a healthy workplace culture.I am most proud of the fresh approach and positive change I brought to the team I led and the service they delivered. I took great personal responsibility in creating an environment where people felt valued and trusted to do their best work. Having colleagues recognise the positive influence I had on people's development and happiness at work is without doubt the greatest reward I took from this role and confirmed for me that people are always the motivating force behind what I set my mind to.
