I am allowed the creativity of finding games, activities, and storytelling that are exciting and fun, but also allow for the religious education that parents desire and is necessary for young people of all ages. I have struggled to locate a curriculum that is broad enough to teach from toddlers through 4th grade well, so I have adapted and written my own curriculum and create individualized lessons each week that allow each classroom to study the same Bible story & practical application each week at their own learning level. During this phase of their personal and spiritual development, I seek to instill a knowledge and understanding of God through examination of the biblical story. I also serve as the youth minister which includes two distinct age-levels: preteens and teens. Throughout the preteen age (9-12), young people are searching for identity and meaning for their own life and purpose. Therefore, my scope and sequence of curriculum is intended to help them to find meaning through the knowledge that they are made in the image of God and that God has designed them to be particular and unique. They then figure out how to strip away masks and embrace their own weirdness honestly and to also love others for their own differences. During the teen years (13-18), I work with the young people to figure out how to make choices in a world of confusion. By this point, the youth have learned about who God is, who they are in God, and started to uncover basic understandings of who they want to be. Therefore, over time, they are able to begin, through prompting and conversation, to find points of connection and begin to intertwine this knowledge into a useable ethic they can apply to their everyday lives and choices.
