My research-led practice employs interdisciplinary, participatory methods, blending digital storytelling, data visualisation, and communicative frameworks. I utilise mixed-methods approaches that incorporate qualitative analysis, computational techniques, and human-centred design to explore media ecosystems, digital governance, and socio-technical systems in real-world applications.As a leading expert and innovator in AI, digital and data storytelling, I specialise in health and science communications. With extensive experience as a data storytelling trainer, I authored The Data Storytelling Workbook, a practical guide offering evidence-based techniques for emotive and effective data storytelling for practitioners and researchers.Currently, I co-direct the Centre for Science, Health and Data Communications Research at Bournemouth University, and serve as the programme leader for the 'Data and Digital Leadership' professional development suite. My training sessions have empowered professionals across the NHS, local councils, SMEs, NGOs, and universities worldwide.I have published extensively on 'humanising data' and data storytelling, authoring books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed articles. My work has been supported by a wide range of funders and organisations, including, UKRI, the Wellcome Trust, the British Academy, Google, CancerUK, the US Embassy, and the United Nations. This research has influenced journalistic reporting and NGO strategies, including a Webby Award-winning data storytelling project, web-comics, and exhibitions at notable venues like the V&A, Barbican, and The Whitney.Committed to taking knowledge out of the ivory tower, I regularly make public engagement and media appearances, bringing our work to outlets like the British Science Festival, The Conversation, The Guardian, The Financial Times, BBC Radio.I also enjoy working with dedicated and driven teams to create impactful data stories, through consultancy, contract research and bespoke training.
