In my current in-house role with the Strategic Investment Board as Associate Legal Counsel, I advise a range of Departments and public bodies in Northern Ireland specialising in public procurement, commercial contracts (including, in particular, IT), PPP/PFI and similar models, funding arrangements, State aid and infrastructure etc. It is a high pressure role as the compact SIB legal team advises the larger organisation and its clients in connection with projects that are mainly of strategic importance to Northern Ireland and of high value. I often draw upon my experience of working in the private sector for a number of years in the top tier commercial law firm, McGrigors (now Pinsent Masons, previously L’Estrange & Brett), and apply this to my current public sector role. By way of background, SIB helps Government:•plan infrastructure•deliver major projects, and•manage assets. It has four key responsibilities:•preparing the Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland on behalf of the NI Executive (ISNI)•helping the public sector develop and deliver major programmes and projects•operating the Asset Management Unit (AMU)•championing reform
