About Anna Guell Izard
My field of expertise is Mechanical Behavior of Materials and Structures. I analyze the linear and non-linear behavior of materials and structures both theoretically and experimentally. The sub field I work in is Architected Cellular Materials, these materials are formed by a structure (unit cell) periodically repeated throughout the space. This way, we can optimize and tune the topology of the unit cell (structure shape), to obtain the maximum performance (strength, stiffness...) per unit weight. I analyze, theoretically and using finite element analysis (both dynamic and static analysis simulations, linear and non linear) the mechanical behavior of the structure; I manufacture the material (using additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping or machining); I characterize the mechanical behavior of the constituent material; I test the prototypes, either quasistatic tests (using universal testing machines, nanoindenters, digital image correlation, and/or strain gauges), or dynamic tests (using electrodynamic shakers, and accelerometers) to verify the theoretical/FEA model; and, once the model is verified, I find the optimal performance of the architected material/structure.

Graduate Research Assistant
- Worked on analyzing the stiffness and strength of architected/cellular materials. The analysis was theoretical and numerical (FEA, finite elements analysis). - Analyzed and optimized a metal/viscoelastic material hybrid lattice to maximize the dissipated energy. Analysis was performed using finite element analysis (FEA), by doing mechanical simulations of the polymer-metal composite. Experiments included the dynamic mechanical analysis of the viscoelastic material. - Researched innovative multistable structures to dissipate energy. The research process included designing (CAD software), analysis (theoretically and using FEA), manufacturing (using rapid prototyping and casting), and testing of prototypes and polymers (using a universal testing machine, strain gauges, digital image correlation, and drop tests). Performed static and dynamic nonlinear simulations.- Studied wave propagation and acoustic properties of different architected materials. The study was performed both using FEA and Matlab code developed from scratch. Experiments were performed using an electrodynamic shaker and accelerometers. - Manufactured and characterized the mechanical properties of polymeric and carbon nano-architected materials. The polymeric materials were manufactured using two photon lithography. The carbon structures were obtained by pyrolyzing the polymeric structure. The lattices were tested using a nano-universal testing machine. The study included analysis of failure modes and modeling propagation of cracks through the ceramic structure using FEA. - Designed and built a top-down digital light processing (DLP) 3d printer to print with pre-ceramic resin (polymeric resin that becomes ceramic after pyrolysis). The project involved designing and constructing the hardware, 2D drawings for design and build, as well as implementing the electronics of the z stage actuator controller.

- Examined, using finite elements, the buckling of thin walled metal beams, depending on the length, thickness and imperfection. The simulations were static non-linear, and the plasticity of the metal was characterized.- Analyzed the mechanical properties of tensile samples printed with selective laser sintering, as a function of the printing speed, laser power, printing orientation, and base material composition.- Assisted students on how to solve problems using FEA software Ansys.- Worked on the maintenance and updating of the educational website Prismatic 1.0 http://www.upc.edu/prismatic/.- Prepared support material for the lectures of strength of materials.
