I'm a university professor whose teaching and research expertise is in management and policy. I have a deep commitment to - and diverse experience in - higher education, viewing it as a key gateway to social and economic mobility for students. I believe higher education institutions are also critical and exciting engines for knowledge building and community service. I'm a strong supporter of shared governance, believing that organizations - very much including higher ed institutions - work best when their diverse, talented constituencies are all at the table to shape operations.In my research, I study job quality - what makes employment good for workers, their families, and for employing firms. Across a range of sectors and workplaces, I've investigated why employers compensate and manage jobs as they do, how public policies shape that, and why and how jobs affect people. For the last 20 years I have taught courses in program development, strategic planning, human resource management, public policy design and implementation and negotiation. For most of the last two decades I have also delivered a multi-part workshop series on professional job searching I developed for graduating students, alums, and current helping professionals.I have served in varied leadership roles within academia, including Associate Director (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and nationally-elected board member for the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR). At Rutgers, I am the 2023-24 Chair of the New Brunswick Faculty Council; on the Rutgers Senate, I am an elected Faculty Representative, Executive Committee member, and co-Chair of its Faculty and Personnel Affairs Committee; and I'm a past member of the Executive Council of the AAUP/AFT (faculty union).
