About Anna Hemming
I seek opportunities where I can help students achieve their personal, academic and career goals. As a professional in higher education, I strive to be a FACE students know. I am Facilitative, Accessible, Collaborative, and Empowering.Facilitative – As an advisor, mentor, and coach, I am a facilitator of learning. This involves sharing accurate information, helping students understand their program requirements, and referring students to campus resources. Accessible – While recognizing students’ individual needs, I understand the personal, social, and cultural challenges facing LGTBQ+ and first-generation populations. I also feel passionately about supporting changes to promote equity and inclusion and amplify voices who have been systematically silenced. Using a holistic approach and proactive advising practices, I care for students’ individual, educational, and professional goals. I create a safe space where they feel supported and heard. Collaborative – I build trusting relationships by partnering with students through their learning experience. We work together to establish goals and plan appropriate actions so the student may achieve them. Reminding students to celebrate each step builds their sense of ownership, belonging, and self-efficacy. It is also my responsibility to collaborate with colleagues across campus in order to best serve students. Empowering – I ask positive open-ended questions to help students identify their strengths and set goals. This Appreciative Advising practice shapes students into better critical thinkers, problem-solvers, decision-makers, and self-reflectors. I encourage students to listen carefully to their own voices and grant themselves permission to change their mind.
