As my first opportunity for work as a bachelor level professional, I was eager to work with the population served by Cherokee Health Systems. As a requirement for successful case management, I became aware of and engaged with community service providers throughout Knoxville. Through my work as an advocate for my clients, I gained the experiences of waiting in line to apply for SNAP benefits at the DHS office, collecting food at local pantries, attending informal appeal hearings at KCDC, and navigating the TennCare system, to name a few. My work included co-facilitation of Anger Management and Intensive Outpatient drug and alcohol recovery groups. Most recently I worked in the Women’s Health Clinic. My focus there has been assisting pregnant women to access insurance, but other responsibilities include guiding drug addicted patients through the process of finding treatment and referring patients to resources for items necessary to care for a child.

My time at the Florence Crittenton Agency solidified my interest in working with the youth and adolescents. The environment at FCA was more contained than what I had been used to previously, and thus afforded me the opportunity to become more involved with the drug and alcohol recovery curriculum, which I enjoyed immensely. I used the skills I had gained at previous employment to lead group sessions with the clients including life skills, 12-steps, and anger management. Here I became comfortable moderating conflict between clients and intervening when necessary.

As my first foray in to the world of social work and mental health, my time at Acadia Village proved to be a trial by fire. I often found myself responsible for up to 12 adolescent clients many of whom were addicted to drugs, members of gangs, or suffering from severe mental illness. It was here that I learned how to make important decisions quickly and under a great deal of stress. The preservation of safety remained the priority, and I found that establishing a positive and trusting rapport was the most effective way to maintain the safety and security of both clients and staff. I facilitated daily group “processing” sessions as well as structured confrontations between clients about their daily life within the residence.
