Within the operational underwriting department of a successful motor insurance company, I now specialise in working with the electronic data input system and look to identify and resolve any errors within this system. Alongside this I am required to analyse insurance policy data to ensure the customer profile fits within certain scheme parameters and once identified, I review any that do not meet the criteria. As part of this role I am required to make important underwriting decisions, a task which requires knowledge, expertise and the ability to take ownership of my own decisions. I am also expected to maintain a good rapport with the product heads and keep them informed with any issues within their products this can include; compiling Excel reports to refer on to them and setting up face to face team meetings to address any issues. As the most experienced team member, I also coordinate the team and allocate out any daily tasks, an aspect of the role I enjoy and which has reinforced my strong leadership skills. Alongside this I regularly review the team’s processes and update the process guides to ensure optimum process efficiency is maintained. As part of my technical role I am also required to liaise with the Motor Insurers Bureau and the traffic police in order to attend to any urgent enquiries, a role that requires a high level of professionalism.

Typical duties involved manually updating the ever-changing customer database in line with strict deadlines and acting as the company’s first point of contact by answering incoming calls. I continually interacted with brokers, customers and other key stakeholders to deal with a wide range of queries, an experience which requires excellent communication and assertiveness skills teamed with the ability to work well under pressure. As an experienced member of the team, I was often entrusted with training new colleagues, further strengthening my leadership and teamwork skills. I have also won several individual awards including ‘operational underwriting hero of the month’ and various quarterly awards.

At University, I worked part-time as a support worker. This job involved attending additional lectures on behalf of students with learning disabilities. I provided support by taking clear and concise notes at lectures for my clients. Concurrently, I took on the challenging role of a transcription facilitator requiring me to utilise highly developed communication skills. Managing these commitments around my own studies significantly strengthened my time management and organisational skills.

Working in a busy Mark & Spencer café, I put into effect the company’s in-depth customer service training and provided customers with a courteous, efficient and high quality service. I was responsible for managing customer complaints and learnt to be flexible whilst working efficiently and effectively in a highly pressured and challenging environment. With team work being one of the core values of the company, I also gained valuable insight into the importance of employees working together to provide a seamless customer experience.
