My love for the English language began with a reading list. Ten years old with a broken wrist and nothing to do, I armed myself with all the titles I needed to read the summer before starting middle school and took the library by storm. I found myself obsessed with the wide variety of literature at my disposal, and reading quickly became my favorite form of escapism. I would read mythology when the real world bored me, science fiction when I wanted to stimulate my mind, fantasy when I was feeling imaginative, and romance when I wanted to smile. My love for reading is what eventually led me to start writing; I want to create the stories I needed to hear as a child.This passion has led me to pursue a career in teaching English to the next generation of readers and writers. I plan to teach students beyond the normal scope of what is typically taught in a high school literature class, integrating diverse books and authors into my lessons. I aspire to foster a learning environment that prioritizes inclusion, accessibility, and equity. It is my hope that each student leaves my class with a newfound appreciation for books and the way they shape us as people.My strengths lie in forging interpersonal relationships, adapting to the changing needs of students, maintaining organizational skills, and encouraging class participation. I have experience in guiding constructive group discussion as a leader in campus ministry, and am able to implement a variety of different activities to both engage students and evaluate their learning from working as a tutor at the University of North Texas’s Writing Center.As a future educator, I want students to see that I am not afraid to fail or try new things so that they reflect my habits and thus, challenge themselves to become better readers and writers in the process.
