Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. Anna Johnson is an accomplished pianist and flutist who is committed to community engagement and bringing music to the underserved. She has volunteered as a music teacher in San José, Costa Rica, led a musical instrument workshop for local children at the Bibliothèque Communautaire Deschapelles in Haiti, performed a solo recital for the disabled with “Concerts des del Cor” in Valencia, Spain, and taught for Portland Piano Program, which partners with a local school to provide free lessons for underprivileged students in Louisville’s west end. Dr. Johnson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in piano and flute and completed Dr. Helen Marlais’ Piano Pedagogy Certification at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, received two Masters degrees from the University of Louisville, both in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and in Flute Performance, and has most recently completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Pedagogy at Texas Tech University, supplemented with a Graduate Certificate in Collaborative Piano. Active as a collaborative artist, Johnson has performed a wide array of repertoire in a variety of ensembles and finds great joy in working with other musicians, often premiering new compositions or promoting lesser-known works. Recent and upcoming projects include: presenting a session at the 2023 MTNA Collegiate Chapter Symposium; recording Zaka by Jennifer Higdon for an album of living women composers with Texas Tech University's Contemporary Music Ensemble; performing 1- and 6-hand piano works on a 1-8 hands concert tour; performing for special events; teaching piano at Boaz Performance Academy and the Bellarmine University Preparatory program; and completing her DMA dissertation: Serving the Underserved: Learning from Experiences with Community Music Programs.
