Performing independent research with the guidance of a graduate student in Dr. Charles E. Murry's Laboratory. My current project focuses on improving stem cell-derived therapies to regenerate the heart after myocardial infarction. Optimal survival of cardiac-derived stem cells, and thus regeneration, has not been possible due to the ischemic conditions generated in the heart after an infarct. To introduce a source of oxygen, we are working to combine the photosynthetic machinery of plant cells with mammalian cells to be co-injected alongside stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. My research includes but is not limited to independent differentiation of stem cells lines, confocal imaging, oxygen graph measurements, and novel experimental design involving co-culture and light stimulation.

I assist in general laboratory tasks and coordinate laboratory maintenance while observing other researchers and learning basic tissue culture and research techniques. My work includes but is not limited to:preparing general reagents for laboratory stockmaintaining laboratory systems and procedures to allow for efficient and effective researchcoordinating task distribution and scheduling of other undergraduate student assistants participating in a lab events teaching middle and high school students about the cardiovascular system
