The research for two separate projects included understanding the right to counsel in the setting of incarceration for failure to pay probation and parole fees and Title VII employment discrimination claims for temporary workers affiliated with staffing agencies.

I fielded calls from people incarcerated in Massachusetts prisons who need assistance with parole hearings and referred callers to other appropriate organizations depending on the caller’s issue. I also organized call and mail records for the clinic, helped maintain and communicate with current clinic client waitlist, and managed other student workers in the clinic.

My position was primarily client-facing but also geared towards helping inform our nutrition team's advocacy efforts. I worked with clients to navigate eligibility and the appeals process within the federal nutrition programs, and through our client work we tracked systemic issues on the state-wide level. I also led our SNAP Access Group, which is a coalition of partners across Tennessee who are dedicated to strengthening the nutrition safety net in our state.In this role I managed 15-20 cases at a time, assisting Tennesseans to apply for SNAP and work through administrative barriers, securing over $370,000 worth of benefits for clients; worked closely with staff attorneys to prepare to represent clients in SNAP administrative appeals; tracked systemic issues in TN’s implementation of federal nutrition programs to communicate and strategize with TJC’s nutrition advocacy team, staff attorneys, and Tennessee policy makers; co-wrote TJC’s first official protocol for SNAP casework and a trouble-shooting guide for future Client Advocates; and presented nutritional access and hunger data during monthly partner webinars and participated in calls with the TN Department of Human Services.

The Gateway Center offers a multi-faceted approach to ending houselessness in metro Atlanta. Offering many programs to help clients get back on their feet such as GED classes, Mercy Care medical clinic, case management, a clothing closet, and over 360 residential beds. My internship at Gateway allowed me to do the following: lead and facilitated both adult and youth volunteer groups; offer one on one assistance in the GED classroom; aid in fundraiser coordination (Human Clay Fundraiser) by gathering corporate donations within the greater Atlanta area; lead art therapy classes.
